Why is this happening to the Euro?

The European Union is struggling with a possible recession looming across Europe as a result of Russia’s cutting off gas supplies to many Eastern European countries and the fear of gas restrictions spreading to the rest of Europe. With the highest inflation record on record and a recession fear growing, expectations are that The Euro will start to weaken against the dollar and will be reach parity very soon.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the Euro has fallen over 6 percent to the US dollar, while all European governments are trying to cut off Russian energy supplies while trying to keep their economies from heading into recession.

The dollar meanwhile is expected to keep surging and increase value against the Euro. It is predicted that the US dollar will eventually reach a better exchange rate soon to $1.03 to a Euro which was last documented in 2017.

  2. This is indeed great news for American travelers planning to visit Europe. With the upcoming summer holidays and the barrier-free travel situation now, post-Covid, this is really motivating for a lot of people to pack their bags & head to Europe. The plus point in Europe, is that, there’s no need to calculate taxes as well since the price displayed is inclusive of taxes, so it’s super easy to do some shopping or dinner!

  3. Sadly we are Canadian and our dollar is not doing too good against either the US dollar or the Euro. I am sure it is now very easy for American travellers to know what they are spending. But I must admit that when I travel, I try not to convert to Canadian dollars. Just makes me question every spend.

    • I can imagine, it is harder for the Canadian dollar but the US dollar is so close, it is easy to see what the equivalent is to the Euro and prices in general are reasonable outside of expensive countries

    • Yes I completely understand that there’s going to be hiccups to traveling again but then the dollar is so strong right now to the Euro, it just might change again with how our economy is looking.

  6. It is a fascinating article and an in-depth observation of the currency market. Indeed, the euro has weakened significantly. The Russian invasion and war in Ukraine and UE galloping inflation may cause the dollar to rise even more. This is for sure good news for US travelers to Europe, especially now, when the pandemic ends.

  7. Yes the world is changing because of the war. And every country would be suffering especially the European nations. I love your overall analysis of why the dollar is now more or less equal to Euros on currency exchange. I am waiting for our Indian currency INR to improve vis-a-vis the Euro which will make our next trip to Europe this year more affordable.

  8. From my Indian perspective too, Euro has declined a lot in the past year. From one euro equals 90 INR to almost 80 INR. It is definitely encouraging for Indians to explore Europe. This is a truly insightful and informative post.

  9. I am an Indian and sadly, our rupee is not doing too good against either the US dollar or the Euro. But it is great to find out that the Americans will have a lot of fun traveling to Europe this time, which will also help boost the tourism in Europe.
